Following the death of her father, Jane's former headmaster encourages her to apply for the position of governess at Hagley Hall, the grand residence of Sir Richard and Lady Margaret Ripley and their three daughters, Anna, Celia and Martha. During the interview, Sir Richard explains his daughters can be high-spirited and need to be subjected to corporal punishment when the occasion demands. Jane is offered the position and soon settles down to her duties, and with the help of slipper, strap and cane, disciplines her charges when their behaviour is unacceptable. But Jane's prowess as a disciplinarian does not go unnoticed, and when Sir Richard is away, he asks her to deal with his wife.
