Ellen is counting down the days to her 18th birthday, because once she comes of age she plans to escape her village and start a new life in the outside world. She and her family live in a village of devout followers of the Church of Misogyny. In Misogyny, women are not only second class citizens, they are expected to be subservient to all men at all times, following their instruction without defiance, never interrupting or speaking disrespectfully. On reaching eighteen, boys are given their own Rod of Correction and told it is their sacred duty to use it to discipline the women of Misogyny. In this puritanical regime, the ultimate authority is Dean Carruthers; his word is law, and the men of the village are eager to show him how well and often they discipline their women. All manner of painful torments are heaped on the females; the rod is used to teach them to respect their betters, and if any female has the misfortune to really mess up, they are subjected to a session on the Penance Platform, where they are severely punished in front of the entire congregation. Ellen is heartily sick of the way of life in Misogyny and her inferior status, but pretends to be the dutiful daughter as she bides her time (while getting her bare bottom punished daily) until her escape.
