Best friends Mary and Maggie compete in the Rising Opera Star competition, in which a jubilant Maggie gets first place, and a disappointed Mary is awarded second place. But unknown to Mary, her potential has been noted by an agent and a famous tenor who watched the show, and Mary is subsequently offered the opportunity of a lifetime - to be trained by the handsome tenor, Richard De Luca. Her new life begins, but does not go smoothly as she initially finds her new maestro masterful bordering on arrogant; he is strict and will stand for no nonsense when it comes to punctuality and working hard - and he isn't averse to tipping her over his lap for an old-fashioned spanking to motivate her to improve her behaviour. But though Richard De Luca can be stern and intense, he is not without humour, and his feelings for his young protégé deepen as time passes. As for Mary, she finds herself falling in love with this man who has come to mean so much to her.
