When Miss Smith takes up her first teaching post at an expensive boarding school - Hollidean Young Ladies' Academy - her first day is memorable. Pupils in her class are so noisy and unruly, the intervention of Miss Grimes and her strap is called for. Clearly unimpressed with Miss Smith's lack of control, Miss Grimes sets about whacking the ringleaders. Later that day Miss Smith observes further punishment when the headmistress canes three 6th form girls. It is not long before Miss Smith learns how to do a bit of whacking of her own, starting off with a large gym shoe, thus making the transition from inexperienced teacher training college graduate to a Hollidean schoolmistress with no scruples about walloping pupils whenever necessary. In time, Miss Smith proves her skill at wielding the cane, becoming a schoolmistress who not only can administer the required discipline, but also show genuine affection for the girls in her care.
