The Charity Auction

by Steve Timmons

It seemed like such a good idea at the time, a quick and simple way to make some extra money. As long as they only targeted out of town, preferably married, fat cat businessmen who visited the club infrequently, they'd have little to worry about. After all, what guy in that position is going to risk his reputation by disputing overcharges to his credit card from a so called 'Gentleman's Club'?

And, in fact, it worked very nicely for many weeks. If they'd just been content to leave it at that they might have been able to go on indefinitely but, as so often happens in such cases, they got greedy, and greed proved be their downfall.

Amber and Megan worked at the South Fork Ranch Gentleman's Club in Dallas. Young, with pretty faces and firm round figures, each was a perfect fit for the job of cocktail waitress in the club. Kitted out in those cute, figure flattering costumes, very similar to what the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders wore, these two ambitious college girls pulled in a nice chunk of change on each shift as the businessmen who patronized the club, especially those entertaining clients on expense accounts, proved to be generous tippers.

It didn't take the girls long to learn how to spot the best bets for their scam. Typically, the older guy hosting a larger party who did some pretty serious drinking and was a little bit careless about checking the slip before signing would be their best bet. The chances that he'd notice the extra gratuity that the girls had written in were even further reduced if the check was presented at just the right moment during the show, just as the dancer on stage was about to shed her last vestige of clothing.

Yes, it was a sweet little deal alright but after a while, Amber and Megan began to dream bigger dreams. Those dreams might have come to nothing at all if it weren't for the fact that Amber's somewhat shifty older brother had just gotten hold of a pocket-sized credit card skimmer... one of those devices that copy the info off of the magnetic strip on the back of the card with just one swipe.

The trick was to do the deed between the customer's table and the card reader station beside the bar. In a dark and noisy club crowded with semi-inebriated customers, it wasn't that hard to do. Then, aided by her tech-savvy brother, Amber was able to transfer the data to a lap top computer at home. After that, she and Megan were all set to embark on some very rewarding internet shopping sprees. They were just getting to the big stuff when the roof fell in, for unbeknownst to the girls, one of their marks turned out to be a prominent club owner from LA.

'Big Tom' Catalano was a friend of Jack Martin, the owner of the South Fork Ranch Club. He'd been visiting for a couple of days when he was victimized. Even though the girls had been smart enough to use a new lap top with the IP address registered to false names, it was still traceable to the Dallas area and since 'Big Tom' only used that particular card for business travel and entertainment, it didn't take him long to figure out when and where he'd been ripped off.

When Jack finished his phone conversation with Tom, he was furious. Over and above the embarrassment of learning that his old friend had been victimized while visiting his club, he knew this sort of thing could be very bad for business and he was determined to put a quick stop to it.

With one call, Jack arranged for the club to be flooded with undercover operatives from the company that provided the club's uniformed security. The six men assigned were chosen for their innocuous appearance and their ability to act the part of easy marks. On the second night of the surveillance, Megan was caught in the act of swiping one of the agent's cards through the skimmer.

Isolated in a back room and surrounded by three very grim looking men, it didn't take the pretty but frightened young woman very long to break and give up Amber. Within minutes, she too had been pulled off the floor and the two 21-year-old college girls found themselves standing in front of Jack's desk.

To many outside observers, this might seem like a cut and dried situation. Two thieves had been caught in the act, so just turn them over to the cops and let the wheels of justice turn. Of course, Jack realized it was not that simple. No business wants the kind of adverse publicity attendant upon the arrest of its employees for cheating customers, a Gentlemen's Club even less so. So, the cops were out of the question but Jack wasn't about to say that as the two girls stood twitching nervously in front of him.

First things first, Jack needed to assess the extent of their activities so he could get into damage control mode. For that he needed their cooperation. To get it, he put the fear of God into them. Laying it on thick, he threatened them with multiple felony charges which would keep them in prison so long their "wrinkles would have wrinkles" by the time they got out. When he'd finally finished, the girls were thoroughly intimidated and tearfully imploring him not to call the police.

Jack let them stew for a minute as he pretended to think it over before rendering his decision. Finally, he threw them a life line. In return for their full cooperation, he would try to work things out with their victims and keep the police out of it.

"I'm doing this for the good of the club," he lectured them sternly. "I run an honest business. Not everyone in the community necessarily approves of this kind of establishment but, regardless of what they think, I don't cheat my customers and I certainly don't allow my employees to do it either! Do you understand me?"

As the girls nodded nervously, Jack demanded they tell him everything adding, "God help you if I find out you lied to me!"

After about twenty minutes of probing questions and tearful answers, Jack ordered Amber to go home and return with the lap top. Megan, needless to say, was detained at the club.

"If you're not back here in one hour," he warned the girl, "I'm calling the cops!"

Amber made it back with time to spare, much to Megan's relief. With Jack standing over her, she showed him all the pertinent data and it was soon determined that the scope of their fraud involved a dozen victims and came to nearly twenty grand, equivalent to about a week's profit at the highly successful club.

"Could have been worse," Jack muttered under his breath as he leaned back in his desk chair.

After a few moments of silence, Amber asked, "What happens now, Mr. Martin?"

"First," he began as he pushed two papers across his desk toward the girls, "you each sign one of these."

The documents which had been prepared during Amber's absence were, essentially, full confessions and promises of complete cooperation by which the two coeds agreed to do whatever Jack demanded of them as he went about trying to smooth things over with the victims of their scam.

After the confessions had been signed and witnessed, Jack dismissed the girls for the night saying, "You'll say nothing about this to anyone. You'll work your assigned shifts and on days when you're not working, you'll check in with me by phone. If you don't show up or check in when you're supposed to, these go to the police! I'll let you know when I finally decide how I'm going to deal with you." Meaningfully tapping the papers on his desk, he fixed his steely-eyed gazed on the two badly frightened young women.

The South Fork Ranch Gentlemen's Club was normally closed on Sundays but this Sunday, a little more than two weeks after the confrontation in Jack's office, Amber and Megan reported to the Club to pay their debt to Jack by playing starring roles in a special charity auction.

For Jack, it had been a very busy two weeks. First, he had required the girls to surrender all of their ill-gotten gains. The loot was comprised of a variety of high value watches and jewelry along with a couple of HD TV's and Blu-Ray DVD players.

Then he personally called each of the twelve victims, including his old pal 'Big Tom' in LA. In return for their confidentiality, Jack promised full restitution to each and invited them to attend the special event at the club. Next, thinking that he might be on to a good thing, Jack invited another couple of dozen of the Club's best patrons, guys with money who would appreciate what he had in mind. He even put the arm on a few of them to kick in with some additional donations-in-kind for the auction.

Next, he had a private conversation with two of his most senior employees, older men with daughters of their own whom Jack knew he could trust with a special assignment. After explaining what was required, he left things in their hands.

Finally, after carefully selecting the employees he needed to staff the event, men and women whose discretion could be relied upon, all was in readiness.

It was 8:00m on the dot when Jack stepped out on the stage to announce the start of the auction. All told including employees, there were about sixty people in the Club to witness and participate in this unusual event.

Half of the space on the stage was taken up by the items to be auctioned off. The bigger items were plainly visible and everyone in attendance had been supplied with a detailed listing. Jack also had two of his most popular dancers attired in their customary skimpy costumes on hand to circulate through the audience bearing the smaller items for closer inspection as they came up for bid.

Front and center he'd placed two chairs with their backs facing out toward the select crowd, each well illuminated by several bright lights.

With microphone in hand, Jack called for everyone's attention and launched into his pitch.

"Welcome gentlemen, one and all, to this special night. We're here to raise money for the Dallas Shriner's Hospital for Children by auctioning off this wonderful array of merchandise. Knowing you all as I do, I expect some very spirited bidding in support of this wonderful cause."

Here, Jack was interrupted by hearty applause. When it died away in response to his upraised hand, he continued, "The South Fork Ranch Gentlemen's Club has long enjoyed a reputation for always giving its patrons something special and this will be no exception. Two of our most lovely young ladies feel so strongly about what we're doing here tonight that they have volunteered to play a special role in the proceedings. So, as I bring them out, I want you all to really give it up for Amber and Megan!"

The crowd broke into loud applause as the two girls answered their cue and strode out onto the stage, each wearing high heels and a bright red satin dressing gown that hung to the mid-thigh level of their long, shapely, lightly tanned legs. Following their instructions, they stood on either side of Jack and, given their circumstances, smiled most engagingly at the audience.

"These two very pretty girls are so dedicated to raising money for the hospital that they have agreed to literally put their cute little tails on the line for the cause!"
