DUDE RANCH MAGIC

by Jocelyn Cross

Derision, complaints, shouts and a mini-riot broke out in the Nu Omicron Omega sorority house at Eastern State University. Sally Jefferson had just started her presentation to the sorority for their annual Spring break trip. Traditionally, sorority members traveled to South Florida for a week of ocean, pool, booze and casual sex. There were other trips where some sorority sister found special package deals to go as far away as California or Mexico to similar 'sun and surf' locations. But Sally Jefferson was a perky, adventurous Senior at Eastern State and she wanted this last Spring break to be different.

She had gotten exactly 32 seconds into her pitch when all hell broke loose. It started with a wave of booing, then name calling, then questions were hurled at her questioning her parenthood. Sally thought there would be some questions, but she had no idea there would be this kind of resistance. Finally, her roommate and sorority President, Taffy Buchanan came to her aid. The assembled sorority sisters quieted and let Taffy speak.

"I know how much Sally has been working on this project," Taffy said, her hands still upraised with palms out to keep her sorority sisters quiet. "I also know the details of her proposal and believe you need to give her a chance to present her findings and recommendation. Once you hear her out, I think you will be quite excited with her recommendation."

Sally was given the chance to speak. "I know this sounds different, and on the surface it's a little ... weird. But let me explain to you why I am recommending our trip this year goes to a Dude Ranch in New Mexico." There was a smattering of groans, but Sally was given the opportunity to pitch her idea. The lights came down and she began a very professionally prepared PowerPoint presentation.

Essentially, she was recommending a week-long stay at Big Bull Ranch near Ojo Caliente, New Mexico. The ranch featured all the activities of a typical dude ranch, with horses, camp fires, and such but it also had its own natural hot springs similar to those at Ojo Caliente. There were a couple of terrific swimming pools and lots of things the girls could do. All this was well and good, but what these college coeds wanted was the chance to imbibe too much booze and use that as an excuse for nights of unbridled casual sex with unknown boys from other colleges.

Well, as Susan began the second half of her presentation, she got to that. "There are a couple of very important facts you need to consider," Sally noted. "First, Big Bull Ranch is owned and operated by an alumna of Nu Omicron Omega, Elizabeth One Feather."

"What? Is she an Indian or something?" called out one girl in the dark.

Sally nodded. "She, in fact, is a member of the Lipan Apache tribe and is a descendant of a long line of shamans ... we would incorrectly call them witch doctors, but you get the idea.
