When Casey returns to the ranch she left three years ago, she wonders what sort of reception she will receive from her dad and Josh. Josh ... in spite of her earlier attempts to get him to notice her as a woman, the cowboy she was in love with when she was eighteen had regarded her only as a little sister, and her provocative outfit and blundering attempts to seduce him had earned her a spanking over a bale of hay. Dismissing his earlier rejection of her, Casey watches as he expertly trains a horse in the corral, and the mere sight of him makes her realise that her feelings towards him have intensified over the years.

Having hitch-hiked all the way from the city to the ranch, Casey is overtired, hungry and dehydrated, and it is Josh who comes to her aid. A hug leads to a kiss and the promise of much more, and as the two of them catch up, Casey learns that her dad has remarried and is away on honeymoon with his new wife. And when her dad learns of Casey's return he is delighted. Speaking to Casey on the phone he tells her that in his absence, Josh is in charge, and Casey must be guided by him and be subject to his discipline.
