New York rich girl, Jamie, is cynical and disillusioned with her life and decides to take time out and spend the summer travelling around the old West. She cuts her hair short and drives to Texas, but disaster strikes when she is robbed of her truck and all her possessions. Salvation arrives in the form of Sheriff Jake Reed. Assuming Jamie to be a runaway teenage boy, he offers her food and accommodation in exchange for work on his horse ranch. The 26-year-old Jamie is content to continue to masquerade as a boy as she adjusts to the simple life and her developing friendship and respect for the quiet self-controlled Jake.
