Hilda has been a dutiful wife leading a somewhat dull existence in the shadow of her successful politician husband - but following his unexpected death, Hilda takes stock of her situation. Now in her late fifties, she gradually learns to reclaim her life, choosing to spend her time enjoying sessions in the gym and swimming at the health spa. She even joins a walking group - which is where she meets Arthur the plumber. He stands out from the middle-class crowd, being a Polish immigrant, and initially she is amused as she listens to his fractured, broken English. He has used his skills to build up a successful business. Balding, brash, stocky but powerfully built, he is everything her husband was not. However, as time passes, Hilda finds herself respecting Arthur more and more.

When Hilda's house is contaminated by leaking oil, she has to move to a less pleasant part of town while repairs are carried out on her property. Arthur is very kind, informing a government agency about her situation to get her additional help and support, and he also escorts her home one evening - but all he gets for his trouble is rudeness and the door slammed shut in his face! He tells her she should be punished for her rudeness. This excites Hilda as she has been doing her own private research on the internet into spanking and domestic discipline.
