The year is 1884 and Arthur Whitlock, on arriving at the portico of a fine old Colonial-style home owned by the Delaney's, announces his intention to speak to the master or the lady of the house. He is truly amazed at the welcome he is given - he is invited for dinner and meets their lovely daughter Caroline. Moreover, the Delaney's seem more than keen to push Caroline in Arthur's direction, suggesting he may like to go walking with her. Mr Delaney tells Arthur his high spirited daughter has developed a fondness for the paddle and actively seeks a sound spanking as a reward for good behaviour! It just so happens that Mr Delaney has such a paddle in his desk drawer - and he hands it over to the delighted Arthur to do the honours.
